Hi there and welcome

I’m so glad you’re here. Taking the first step toward seeking support takes courage and you do not have to walk this journey alone.

At Cardia Counselling, you will find a safe, compassionate and non-judgmental space where you can feel heard, valued, and understood. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, facing personal challenges, navigating relationships - or simply seeking emotional growth - you are welcome here.

My passion is to walk alongside you with empathy, care, and practical support as you work toward healing, resilience, and lasting well-being.

What counselling Is all about

Counselling in the South African context offers a supportive and compassionate space where individuals can explore their emotional wellbeing within the realities of everyday life. It focuses on helping people navigate challenges such as stress, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and emotional strain - while honouring each person’s unique background, values, and lived experience.

Grounded in ethical, evidence-based practice, counselling aims to promote self-understanding, resilience, and healthier ways of coping that empowers individuals to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

At Cardia Counselling I make use of a stepped care model, which is a way of making sure people receive the right level of support at the right time. It starts with the least intensive form of care and “steps up” only when more support is needed. This means clients are not given more treatment than necessary, but they are also not left without help when challenges increase.

For example, someone may begin with counselling, psycho-education or self-help strategies. If their difficulties become more complex or severe, they may be referred for specialised therapy, medical treatment or psychiatric care. This approach ensures that care is flexible, responsive and focused on each person’s changing needs.

Below is an overview of the different HPCSA-registered mental health practitioner categories and the services they provide to help you understand the various forms of support available.

They focus on preventative, supportive, and short-term counselling. They work with everyday life challenges such as stress, adjustment difficulties, relationship concerns, emotional well-being and personal growth. They also provide basic assessments, screening and psycho-education.

They work mainly with children, adolescents and students - but they can also work with adults. Their main area of specialisation is linked to learning, development, and educational contexts through assessing learning difficulties, emotional challenges, behavioural issues and school-related concerns. They support learners, parents and schools through assessment, therapy and guidance.

They focus on emotional, relationship and life challenges as well as mental health difficulties. They often work with personal development, adjustment issues, work stress, trauma and relationship concerns using therapeutic approaches similar to clinical psychologists but with a strong focus on life context.

They specialise in severe and complex mental health conditions including serious mood disorders, trauma and personality disorders. They work in both hospitals and clinics or in private practice and provide advanced assessment, diagnosis and psychotherapy.

They are medical doctors specialising in mental health. They diagnose mental illnesses and prescribe medication when needed. They often work alongside psychologists and counsellors to provide comprehensive

care.
